  • 1.  Exclude locations within a warehouse from Reservations

Is there a way to identify locations within a warehouse that we want to exclude from reservations? We have inbound/receiving locations that we do not want to have reservations to occur because they are pass through locations.

We have explored Inventory blocking and using the location status that adds extra fields in the location profile but that doesn't exclude reservations from occurring.

    Hi Melanie,

As far as I know, there's no way to exclude items on a particular location (profile) within the same warehouse from reservations. As long as all the inventory dimensions are matching the order, they can be reserved.
We have a similar situation where we receive items on either an inbound or production out location. Typically, these are received in inventory status Quarantine, and moved to a storage location before the quality order is validated, which will bring the items in a Released inventory status. It does occasionally happen that the items are released sooner than expected, in which case batch jobs pick the items up during the wave creation process, create a shipment and a load, but fails to create a work (due to the location profile being excluded in the location directives). We finally managed to adjust these load lines to the work quantity with custom code.

If you don't use inventory statuses, the above might not work for you. However, if you know that a work will have to be created at some point from the inbound locations towards a storage location, perhaps during the registration, you can already create a work automatically based on the license plate? That way the work will reserve the items, instead of let's say a sales order. Only downside if you do use inventory statuses, is that you can't specify the license plate with the location, which messes up the quality order validation.

Hope this helps! If you want me to elaborate a bit more, feel free to reach out!

Hi this is how we use location directives to excluded locations from picking reservations for sales order shipments.  I think this is using the advanced warehouse features.  I hope this can help out.

    1. Creating Quarantine and preventing auto picking from SAMPLES location
Warehouse management > Setup > Location directives

    2. (Optional - Prevent Work from starting if there is no inventory)
Warehouse management > Setup > Warehouse management parameters
Sales orders > Location Directives > Checkmark box

    Hi Tim,

How are you reserving the items for sales then?

Reason I'm asking, is that we're using a batch job to auto-reserve and release the sales order to warehouse. During the (automated) wave creation process, a shipment is created, then a load, and then the work (if the location directives allow those items to be put into a work).
This resulted in load lines without a work quantity, for the excluded location profiles (I see you used zones). In order to release those sales order lines to warehouse again, we first had to remove the load line manually, which was time consuming for the warehouse.

As far as I know, your approach only prevents the items to be added to a work, not from being reserved. But I hope I'm missing something, cause if you found a solution, we could also benefit from it!

    Thanks in advance!

    Same issue here!

    If there is a microsoft idea to prevent the "release to warehouse" to consider some locations, I'll vote for it for sure;

There is an idea on the portal for this. I once had the exact issue logged to Microsoft.
Tim's solution will prevent the work creation. The difficulty is that the load will likely be created with a work created qty of 0. From this point the system will never 'Auto-release' without manual intervention. You would need to delete the load line for auto-release to work again.

Think this will need dev work. I was considering a batch job to delete load lines where the work created qty is zero (not sure how this would work for partial release?).
There is also a (re)-release option from the load planning workbench which could be worked as a dev?

Another option is the stock status on arrival. If you could receive the stock in as blocked. There is a batch job to change the stock status. If you set this to recur every few minutes, and it could pick up any stock that is no longer in GIBAY and automatically make it available. Just a theory, would need testing.

We have exactly this situation in our environment. All received parts go through a full QC audit and we don't want any of those items available for sales orders or picking until they've been passed.

Setting work directives to not pick from certain locations based on zone or whatever will work fine, except as you've noticed the automatic release to warehouse will still reserve against the items in not pickable locations.

We ended up changing the inventory status that items are received under (e.g. Quality) to be different from the inventory status items are ordered under (Available). This means the items aren't even reserved during the automatic run, and then the system won't end up in a situation where the items are reserved but it can't pick them.

To aid this we made a small modification to default the incoming inventory status on purchase orders and production orders. You could manage this on purchase orders by the setting on the vendor record I believe. Then we run the inventory status change as a batch job to change any items that are Quality status in our standard warehouse locations to Available status.
