1.  "Best practice" for ABC groups cycle count

I am trying to find an optimal way to perform cycle count by ABC classification in AX2012 (simple warehouse functionality)

Here is what I tried:
- created 4 count groups A,B,C, X, and assigned each item to them.
- defined items as warehouse items for each warehouse.

Now in the "Counting" journal, I can use the "Create" > "Items" option
- If I select one of the count groups, I can have AX generate counting lines, for the items that have not been yet counted in the cycle, based on me entering a limit to the number of lines to be created.

My questions are:
- it seems this approach requires me to create 3 separate counting journals every days (for groups A, B, and C respectively) - this seems a bit inefficient. Isn't there a way to generate a single journal that will contain the items for all 3 groups?

- Every time I run the "create" function I need to enter the correct value for the "Max Number of Lines".
So if I have 600 SKUs on a 30 days cycle, I need to limit the number to 600 / 30 = 20 so that in a full cycle I will end up counting everything in that group.
Again, this requires me to enter a different number for each of the 3 groups, and prone to error - is there a way to automate the creation so I don't have to repeat this every day?

Hello Zvika,

you are not alone for this painstaking process. We to are looking at trying to automate this process and are in discussion with our IT team

Would be good to know the best algorithm for this process, as our ABC is fast moving to slow but doesn't incorporate " critical"
How does your company manage ABC and "Critical" inventory

We also want the system to churn the correct quantities to count in 1 stock take with ex amount of As Bs Cs to manage timely and throughout a financial year  to get ex amount of turn over for each category

I was disappointed with the AX Cycle Counting.

I'm sure it will improve in the future. We're managing our cycles off-line and manually with 'Count Zones'.  We do generate the Count Sheets through AX and run a 'not counted since' at the end of a cycle.

Thanks @Jon Gosche - can you share what configuration allows you to generate the count in AX?

The part I struggle with is to create, in a single counting journal, lines for all the products from groups A, B, and C - in such way that the correct number of each products from each group is included, in such a way that I would count enough products to complete the cycle.

Right now the only way I found is creating 3 different journals (for groups A, B, and C respectively) - and for each of these journals to manually specify how many products should be included.

I just find it hard to believe that a product that has been in the market for so many year, and that is supposedly aimed at "enterprise clients" cannot do something so simple - I keep hoping there is just an embarrassing gap in my understanding of the functionality...

Sorry. We're basically doing the same as you. Counts are based on Locations. Locations are split into Zones by the first character. We chart out the Locations to count on a list. Date and mark off these zone as they're counted generally creating 4-8 count sheets per week. Counts are done first thing in the morning of count days.

Our previous system automatically created count sheets based on how many cycles we wanted to do, number of count days per cycle, then number of products to be counted. We would then set an additional cycle for A products.

If someone has a better or different process, I'd love to hear it.
