Moving Transactional Data from one environment to another

    Hello all,
We are in the beginning stages of implementing D365 as our ERP solution (rom JDE, etc).  Currently we have two modules implemented.  Expense Management and E-Commerce.  For some reason the decision was made to put each module in a separate environment.  Now we are tasked with moving the expense management module from the Expense Management instance into the expense management module on the e-commerce instance.

Templates seem to be fantastic for exporting and importing the configuration data.   But we would like to take the transactional data as well.  I do not think it is as simple as a save from expense and restore on the e-com environment.  Most likely that will overlay the e-commerce data as well.

Is there a list of the entities(tables), that contain the transactional data?  I am thinking the easiest way would be to use data managment for this process as well.

Any ideas/thoughts?  Has anyone done this before?

    Thank you!
    Cindy

    Hi Cindy,

There is no support to import data directly into transaction tables. You can actually import data in worksheets like an expense report and journal. Thereafter post the transactions. This will not ensure to have the same voucher numbers.

    Hi Andre,

So are you saying this has to be done on an individual expense report basis?

Hello Cindy.  When migrating to a new ERP the recommendation is to only load historical balances and open transactions (as necessary).  In addition, there are a number of common strategies to try and minimize the open transactions.  Why?  Because loading transactional detail is hard.  Data management is the right approach, but it isn't easy.  Think of your expense module.  Let's keep it simple.  Someone creates an expense report for a trip, the expense report got approved, and it got paid.  Those are 3 different transactions.  Each action may have happened on a different date.  To recreate that history, you would have to import at least 3 different entities (possibly more) and in the right sequence.  Now that's a simple scenario.  What if the expense report was rejected, then revised, and resubmitted?  What if you have multiple approvers and there was a rejection, revision, and resubmission with each of them?  What if there was a travel request with approvals for the trip before the expense report?  What about a cash advance?  Even if you're able to identify data entries for all of the transactions that impact an expense report, you would have to deal with each expense report individually to import everything in the right sequence.  It is incredibly difficult to rebuild history.  Leave the history where it is.  Load opening balances and open transactions (try to reduce open transactions and keep them as simple as possible).

Based on previous implementation experiences, I would settle all expense reports in the legacy system
Give employees a deadline to submit any pending expense reports and reimburse them
Have a blackout period and then employees can submit expense reports in D 365
Moving transaction data is a nightmare and is a total waste of resources especially when you have a elegant workaround such as this.
