I would suggest everyone involved in the MRP process, learn and understand what and how item coverage's, coverage groups, lead times, and master plans settings that affect MRP behavior. There is a series of 7 decent AXUG webinar recordings (Master Planning Unplugged) that can help you get started for both D365 and AX2012. My company first learned the parameter settings and their function (Test Environment), then created basic coverage groups, ran MRP, then adjusted one or two parameters (baby steps) within a coverage group, then looked at "Net Requirements" to see the before and after, until we got our desired outcome. I think you asking the AXUG community is a great start, as there are many knowledgeable AXUG users willing to help you through your journey. Good luck!
