    Our company is looking at implementing an automated testing solution for Dynamics AX 2012 R3 with eventual upgrade to D365.  We would like to have test sets we can run after code changes to help reduce the time it takes to test (currently done manually) and improve quality.  We are a large manufacturing company (around 70 mfg. locations) so looking for a tool that will scale well.  We have seen demos of Axeptance and Rapise and do like many features they offer.  Am looking for any insight from those whom have any experience with any types of automation tools… however if there are any other large mfg. organizations, input would be a bonus!

    At the place I worked for last year, we searched for automated tool for AX 2012, and could not find anything viable that would not involve massive R&D investment building everything from scratch - so you seem to be ahead of what we got,

    Working now with D365 my insight is that the technology between the versions are so massively different that you need to do extra due diligence to make sure the investment you make in AX 2012 tool would not be lost when you change into D365.
    If I were you I would ask some solid demo of what kind of conversion tools you will get when it's time to move to D365

    For D365, there are rumors that Microsoft will be releasing a new tool for testing sometime later this year.  You might want to look at the standard Form Adapters testing tool that is currently in D365.  While it has it's drawbacks, the nice part is that you can use the Task Recorder to "record" the test and have it run automatically.  The main drawback is that if you change the form in any way, it will break the test.  But the best part about it is the price tag, which is free.  I have not seen a decent tool for AX2012, not for a lack of trying.

    Microsoft has released the Regression Suite Automation Tool for D365FO:

    Regression Suite Automation Tool (RSAT)

    This tool allows for extremely customizable tests to be ran using a task recording output as a baseline and an Excel file as the inputs to run it with. It is in active development and getting lots of feedback and updates regularly. It also ties into Azure DevOps testing suites so you get an overview of what tests passed/failed and why.

    I can confirm the RSAT works pretty neat. BUT the setup of the tool and the proper installation is quite a journey.
    We needed a technical consultant from our implementation partner to fulfil the steps not written in the instruction.

    I can also confirm Patricks input of breakage. You need to use generic Task Guides to run the automated test AND you cannot create existing data. The test will fail. So think properly through your test scenarios.

    I say give it some time to reach a higher and more mature state. Then I see some true potential.

    We're on D365FO and use RSAT for the monthly upgrade preparation. I can give you a more hands on feedback by the end of April.

    Andreas makes very good points about RSAT, especially about "using generic task guides to run automated tests" and "not creating existing data".  That is 1 of the several reasons we still use our tool - Executive Automats.
    We can also include that RSAT doesn't work with AX2012, only D365 and is limited to for Finance and Operations.
    While RSAT, is an improvement, it needs very careful and specific management that requires time and effort on its own.  I'm sure Microsoft will eventually make it more intuitive and user friendly, but for now, it isn't there yet.

    With the latest Selenium based test automation accelerator combined with Microsoft easy repro dev library, you can thoroughly test the D-365 FinOps. Benefits of having code-based automation is that it can handle different integration aspect pretty neat, which is a major drawback in codeless and standalone accelerators.
