    Hi all,

Are trying to clean up some issues prior to upgrading from AX2012R3 to D365FO. One of those items is a problem with our retained earnings balance. When we first went live in AX2012, we had one legal entity and set up each of our manufacturing sites using the SITE financial dimension. After a few months, it became obvious that for inventory and formula management, we needed to have them in separate legal entities. We made that switch back in 2016, and had 3 legal entities set up in AX thereafter... Headquarters, Plant 1 and Plant 2.

The issue is that when we closed out FY 2016, we were left some small balances in the Headquarters company under the plant sites. Our partner at the time was able to clean up everything else somehow, but these balances posted some time later.

Our retained earnings account is 29900 and the other dimension is the site.

What I need to post is this:
                                     DR                    CR
    29900-01                                      75,942.37
    29900-02              58,651.69
    29900-00              17,290.68

The problem is that under interunit accounting, the balancing dimension is set to site and the interunit debit and credit are set to 99998. So, what I get instead is this:

                                     DR                    CR
    29900-01                                      75,942.37
    99998-01
                 75,942.37
    29900-02              58,651.69
    99998-02                                      58,651.69
    99998-00                                      17,290.68

    29900-00              17,290.68

This leaves me in the same place - with balances under site dimensions that I don't want. Only the main account number has changed.

Any ideas how to clear up this would be greatly appreciated.

    Got it!

In reviewing this article from Microsoft, I caught something I've missed all these years... "you can optionally define a balancing dimension".

Since the field presented a drop down list of available dimensions, my assumption was that one of them had to be selected. I was able to go in to Ledger setup and highlight "Site" and delete it. After accepting the warning, I was able to go in and post my correcting entry. Finally, I turned site back on as the balancing dimension, since that is the normal behavior we want in the system.
