We found out recently that you can no longer rename items in D365. Has anyone run into this with the latest updates and if so, what are you doing for those scenarios where you might have to rename an item?

    Thank you

    Hi,

Have you tried the rename option available on record information form for a selected product(item). Refer attachment: Rename.jpg. I could see this option is available on Release update 29. Hope this helps you.

    Hi Chaitanya,
Yes, this is what we were able to use previously. When you click that and update the item name, after saving you will get a message "It is not allowed to rename the item number"

I get the message  "It is not allowed to rename the item number" anytime there is a transaction on the item.  It will let me rename only if no transactions.  If it is a fresh transaction, i can take it off the PO, Production order or sales order, rename and put it back.  In AX2012 it would allow renaming anytime and would change the previous transactions to match.  This was helpful when an item was entered incorrectly and not found till after a transaction was done or the vendor changed p/n because they changed systems and we didn't want to lose the history on the item.  Hopefully this will change in the future.

    Hi -

Yes, Item renaming was removed in D365FO.  This was done to protect data integrity.

A strong materials board (engineering change, etc.) should prevent many errors. For clients that intentionally rename Items (no entry error), consider strategies such as using Size or Color (renamed) or rev'ing Items (back to engineering board).

    Thanks.....Dave

Yes, I can see that you can no longer complete a rename for Released Product Items in 2019 release wave 2, Update 29.

I did try rename elsewhere (AP Charges and Delivery Terms) and it worked.

    Hi,

Yes, as mentioned by others we cannot rename ItemId provided if the concerned item has any transactions. If we try so we get an error message stating "It is not allowed to rename the item number". Reference: Method renamePrimaryKey of Table InventTable. (Refer attachment: DeniedRenaming.jpg).

    Hi David,

Would you have any knowledge whether this functionality has been removed permanently or can it be expected to be brought back with some future release?

    Dave,

I hope you can get this back to management.  Also, this rant is not personal though I am quite passionate about this.

Removing this feature is a huge mistake until you allow us to change which inventory dimensions are enabled on an item.  The most common reason we rename items is to enable/disable serialization on an item.   However, it is also done due to initial item set-up issues which no amount of change process management will completely eliminate.

We need a method to correct mistakes,  the response 'just don't make mistakes' is not good enough.   It would be like disabling the ability to hotfix D365FO because "A strong quality control board should prevent many errors'.

The item rename allows us to correct a great many issues with minimal impact on business operations.

I noted KB 4503738 describes the item rename as having a different impact on D365 than it does in AX2012.   I hope there is more to the story because this will be yet another roadblock to the adoption of D365FO.

    Hi -

Yes, there has been some partner and customer feedback to support on the removal of the Item Rename functionality. I have not heard of any plans to reinstate the functionality.

You could try the Ideas site. While not new functionality, viewers can vote on entries and we can get a measure of interest that way.

    https://experience.dynamics.com/ideas/

I was just on the Ideas site and did not see an entry. So someone needs to create (search first to be sure) that entry and urge others to vote for their suggestion.

As I mentioned earlier, the Item Rename was removed to protect data integrity. Other Renames were not impacted (but subject to the same data integrity test).

    Thanks.....Dave

We're on AX2012 and use the rename function quite often. Quite often to correct product type of Item Model Group when we have to change products to Batch/Lot number or Serial Number.
This will be a major concern if/when switching to D365.

Has anyone had any success with a workaround or another method of renaming an item while being able to keep the sales history tied to that item?

If historical information is the need to be swapped then using rules in data warehouse/PowerBI should be able to accomplish it

    Hi Justin,
We are in a similar situation now where we need to change the ItemID where the item has transactions. I was wondering if you had found a workaround already?
Our challenge is that the original item was setup as with a product subtype of "Product" the corrected item needs to be a "Product Master". In the past, we re-named the defective item & product IDs, and then re-created the desired one with the new setup.
FYI - we enabled advanced warehousing and dimensions control on a new site that is building items/products that were previously setup with legacy processes/non-warehouse controlled.
Any help or guidance that you've received would be appreciated!
    thanks,

Thanks for your reply Jason, we just got a response from MS with regards to a case that I opened for this as well.
They won't budge with de-activating the flight option that blocks the re-name option when transactions exist.
We will need to find a way around this as well. Our business users won't let us use a different part number though.

In D365 you can not re-name an item unless there has been no transactions.  You can re-name an item (if you have the permissions to re-name it) if there have been no transactions on the item.

If there are transactions-you have to create a new part number.

Seems that there may be a couple of different lines of discussion going here - revising an Item Number and revising a Product Name. Since the original post references "renaming", I'll throw this out. Can still rename a released product with transactions using Product > Languages > Translations.

    Jack Moran:
When you go to Product > Languages > Translations, does this change the released product part number?  If so, how do you change it from here?  We are trying to rename the released product number.  I don't see how this does that.  The only way i know to change the Released Product number is through the options>rename on the Released Product number.  We could do this in AX version before D365.  If i only want to change the product number, i can "open" the product number and select Product>Maintain>change Product number.  This does not change the Released product number.

The only way I know of to change the Released product part number is to do it before any transactions occur.

I have had someone enter a part number incorrect and place an order and purchase order on the item and have the factory come back and tell us we set the part number up wrong.  I can not correct the part number and have it change it on the sales order or purchase order like it did in D365.  We have to create a new part number completely.  Or have them take the number off the PO and sales order so it doesn't show transactions and re-name the number and put it back.  If i am not notified of a wrong number till after the PO is invoiced, the number is there forever.  No changes can be made.

    Hi Desi,
No it changes the Product Name. That is why I tried to differentiate between changing the item number and the product name in my answer since the original post asked about "renaming".

Jack Moran:  Thank you for clarifying.  You can change the product name and the description in edit mode also.  Just need to "open" the item and you can change the product name, search name and description.
