    Hi,

Has anyone ever setup Power BI with the "new" Power BI embedded, specifically in D365 F&O ?
I tried to google it, but cannot find the one which discuss specific on how to connect it in F&O, for example in the Analytics tab, and also in the designated F&O workspace tile.

Here is the 'best' resource I have regarding all the configuring thing :
    - setup the service = Power BI Embedded on Azure :

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/developer/azure-pbie-create-capacity

    - embed it in "an app" (over here it doesn't specifically discuss about doing it in F&O) :

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/developer/embed-sample-for-your-organization

    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,

    Done a few.
Essentially for embedded powerBI, you have to build using the entity store. On a development box, there is the AXDW database which you can build your reports against.
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/unified-operations/dev-itpro/analytics/author-distribute-power-bi-reports

Once you have developed your PBIX file (powerbi desktop file). You will need a developer to upload it to the AOT and reference it on a form.
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/unified-operations/dev-itpro/analytics/add-analytics-tab-workspaces

    Hopefully the links provided help.

    Hi Munib,

Thanks and appreciate your help. However, I understand how to build the report and prepare it in F&O and Power BI, and the issue is the use of Power BI Embedded method.

    Thanks.

Are you on a onebox?  If so, here's links that I used to get an embedded workspace running on a demo box and modified it:

    https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dynamicsaxbi/2017/07/29/accessing-analytical-workspaces-on-1box-environment/

Here's a thread on Yammer here where MSFT said we should still be able to use the deprecated Workspace Collections for the time being:

       https://www.yammer.com/dynamicsaxfeedbackprograms/#/Threads/show?threadId=917002277

That thread also references this document as a step by step in case you don't have a yammer account:

                    https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21ADE7qqiS8gY0Y-0&cid=ACA24D40F4D22FD3&id=ACA24D40F4D22FD3%21982&parId=ACA24D40F4D22FD3%21981&action=locate

One important step that I don't remember being called out very well in the links above, after you overwrite the PBIX file on the onebox, you need to go into table browse and delete the row that corresponds to your PBIX in the table PBIEMBEDDEDREPORTCONFIG table, then rebuild the application workspaces / application suite model.

    Hi thanks,

Actually that is the point, all blog resources still "promote" this Workspace Collection. What I'm looking for is really the new approach "Power BI Embedded".
The two links I provided in my original message does actually describe that Workspace Collection gonna be deprecated, and it's starting June 2018, has been a year already. And to be honest, even though many people keep saying it still worked until now, we have decided to not use that anymore instead move on to the new approach.

Anyway, thanks for your kind help. Appreciate it.

    Hi An Ton,

Sorry, I must be misunderstanding something.  I'm of the understanding the steps I provided do result in a working Power BI Embedded / Analytical workspaces on a Onebox environment that enables these analytical workspaces:https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/unified-operations/dev-itpro/analytics/analytical-workspaces.  This is not a PowerBi.Com connection.

    Hi Colby,

I'm sorry, but I'm afraid somehow it confuse me even more. :)
I think it is better I explain more detail about what I already did, so we have more clear view on what I'm searching for.

Firstly, maybe we can watch this first :
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEHfUuoZseo

For using Power BI Embedded Service, based on the link I provided here what I already did :
    1. On my Azure Active Directory, create new Service named "Power BI Embedded", just to emphasize a bit, if we are typing Power BI in this Azure search, will show two : Power BI Workspace Collection and Power BI Embedded. So the first one is the one that deprecated and the latest is the one I want to use.

From what I understand, this is actually just for capacity planning thing, but this is the one we need to use during creation of Workspace in Power BI.

    2. In PowerBI.com, in Workspaces, choosing Create App Workspace, add User and choose the Power BI Embedded in point 1 for dedicated capacity planning.

    3. Upload PBIX file then publish.

    4. Back in Azure, create App Registration, to register my D365 apps. The important thing about this, is to get the Application Id and Application Secret.

This the last step I took because then I do not have a clue, what to do next ? I have my Power BI Embedded Service ready (point 1 to 3), and I have my D365 F&O apps registered and have the key. Then what to do ?

Have a hunch I need to do something with Web.config, but I have no idea what to edit ? And even after I edit it, what I need to do then inside D365 F&O ? should I do the same thing as the old ways, go to PowerBI.com Configuration or how? not to mentioned, if I want the Analytics tab to be working on some of its standard D365 form, is the procedure still the same as the old ways or how ? There are many thing not well informed or described in Microsoft docs, which is frustrating since D365 is their ERP, but it seems lack of support. I guess because they aim Power BI to be a global apps which able to support numerous ERPs and others then they forget their own.

Btw, regarding the step above, actually there is a document I'm able to find, I attaching it now. It did suggest to use some tools for help "automating" those steps, but it stuck at step 2 - Register apps, like step 4 in my above explanation.

    Hope it is cleared.

    Many thanks,

    Hi An Ton,

I think you may be confused with Power BI Embedded within context of F&O and building your own embedded Power BI application.

In F&O, the use/creation of Analytic Workspaces IS Power BI Embedded. Microsoft has already done the embedding part for you. You do not need to do all the steps as outlined in the video and related links.

When you follow the steps outlined by Munib and Colby that part is Power BI Embedded. This is currently the only option within F&O to use Embedded Power BI.

Important to know, Embedded Power BI in F&O can ONLY use the Entity Store...no other data sources allowed at this time.

Your other option is to configure the PowerBI.com integration for Operational Workspaces. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/unified-operations/dev-itpro/analytics/configure-power-bi-integration  (which is not Embedded Power BI, and can include data sources outside of Entity Store).

    Hope this helps.

    Mike

    Hi Mike and all,

Yup, to be honest, I really am confuse on all this term. Anyway, we do still need to modify this Web.config, right ?

So the confusion is for example in the link that Colby informed here :

    https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dynamicsaxbi/2017/07/29/accessing-analytical-workspaces-on-1box-environment/

    There are these statement :

    Power BI Embedded Service details:

Workspace Collection Name: The name of the Workspace Collection created when deploying the Power BI Embedded Service
Access Key1:  The secret key #1 used to access the Power BI Embedded service
Access Key2:  The secret key #2 used to access the Power BI Embedded service

It is still using Workspace Collection whereby we are informed that Workspace Collection is deprecated. So what value we should input over here? just input the Workspace name that I created in my Step 2 ?

So the AccessKey 1 and 2, I will input the Application Id and Application Secret in my Step 4 ?

Above all that, one thing makes me on doubts is that document is dated 29 July, 2017, with no updates, whereby, I hate to say this again, the Workspace collection does scheduled to be deprecated starting June 2018. So this is the confusion.

Many thanks for your kind explanation and help.

    An Ton,
Yes, follow the step by step here, it discusses what to do with your secret keys in the Web.Config file.

     https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21ADE7qqiS8gY0Y-0&cid=ACA24D40F4D22FD3&id=ACA24D40F4D22FD3%21982&parId=ACA24D40F4D22FD3%21981&action=locate

We did this in Sept. of last year, and again a couple weeks ago when 10.0.3 was released.  Using workspace collections still works.

    An Ton,

This link, https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dynamicsaxbi/2017/07/29/accessing-analytical-workspaces-on-1box-environment/ , is strictly for "hacking" a 1Box environment for dev/test purposes only.

Below is a newer post that describes hacking a 1Box environment, but, as this is being deprecated, I would not be surprised if it will not work on newer F&O environments.
    http://www.everythingdynamicsaxbi.com/2019/02/03/how-to-configure-power-bi-embedded-for-dynamics-365-for-finance-and-operations-one-box-environment/

For a one 1box environment, may be out of luck for doing embedded Power BI.

    Hi,

    Many thanks to you both.

So I guess I've come to this conclusion that the way we setup in F&O is not change. Provided what we're create in Azure is Power BI Embedded  NOT Power BI Workspace Collection, it is merely just for capacity planning only. Web.config tag will use the same "Workspace Collection" and we just put the Workspace name that we just created in PowerBI.com (linked with that new service)

Hence, no matter where I search, it always come to this word "Workspace collection still works". The Espen's blog, actually I've found it already a while ago, but because he still use that "word" makes the doubt. It has the same concern also in one of it's comment at the bottom which not answered. I've probably take wrongly that "..still works.." is different that a straight-forward ".. not change..". However I cannot prolonged the argument. And also for the "...not surprised if it is will not work..", yeah, being used to it with this product.

Again, thank you for the insight. Have a nice weekend to you all.

    Regards,

    Hi all,

Hope I'm not make all of you bored. :)

So today, I've decided to follow though the step described in all those link and document for set up Power BI Embedded. However stuck when Create Template Deployment in Azure.

After key in all the necessary selection like choosing Resource Group, fill in the template like it is suggested, I bumped to an error like this :
"Subscription is not registered to use namespace "Microsoft.PowerBI" See https://aka,ms/rps-not-found for how to register subscription."

I've followed the link, and found exactly what it said --> Microsoft.PowerBI not registered. But I do have another which is "Microsoft.PowerBIDedicated" registered.
    PowerBI Embedded

    My confusion is :

    1. What is the different of these 2, and where is it coming from ?

    2. Can I switch to the one that registered ?

    3. If I need to registered, the page suggested to just click the link, but there is no link, is it because I have no authorization ? I can ask but I need to explain first what's all this about.

I have a feeling I should use the dedicated one since I think it is related to PowerBI Embedded service, am I right to say that ? So question no 2 is the most important of all,

    Kindly advise.

    Thanks.
