  • 1.  One barcode with multiple data elements?

Hello all, I am hoping you can help here.

The customer I am working with is in the food industry. They will receive the raw material (live animals), process it, and produce finished goods that are then packaged in a case. Each case will have a different exact weight so we are using catch weight functionality. The production run will output multiple cases that they will then use to build a pallet of product. Each one of the finished cases will receive a case label. The barcode in the case label will include multiple data elements: UPC code, production date, weight and the case number for that production run. Cases can then be shipped to customers in single quantities, multiple cases or complete pallets.

When scanning the cases, we will then need to collect all the data in the barcode with a single scan. Has anyone had a requirement to collect multiple bits of information and populate those elements in this way, from one barcode scan? Is this possible?

While I do not have experience scanning multiple values in a single scan, GS1-128 barcodes are capable of housing multiple values. Check out the following link:

    Hi Esteban,

This is a common requirement and is the most requested feature in warehouse management.  Here is the Microsoft idea on the topic.  Most partners will develop an extension for this type of functionality.  Eventually I suspect this will become a standard feature of warehouse management, but it is not included currently.
