Creation of BOMs

    We are running AX 2012 R3 CU8

We have a  couple of simple BOM items we would like to implement

    1. Bom one has 4 active BOMS by color which each contain 1 item each
    2. Bom two has 1 active BOM with two items
    3. We would also like to add a freight charge of 5.00 for each BOM item and a labor charge of 3.00 for each BOM item
    4. I tried to add a service item to it and received the following message
      1. An item cannot be associated with a BOM if it is associated with an item model group where the attribute Stocked product is not selected.
    5. I then went to item group and created a new group with stocked price unchecked
    6. Tried to change the item to new item group and get the following error
      1. You cannot change the item model group because that would cause the Inventory policy to be changed.
    7. We also looked into changing the costing version->pricing form and use price charges field.
    8. Not sure about side effects and setting of a version for each possible size is a lot of data rather than just basing on color.

I have a couple of questions
    1. What is the best way to do this?
    2. Are there any process documents or other walkthroughs that show this process, I am finding a lot of contradictory information on the internet?
I am attaching a task recorder of what we have tried so far as well as the DIXF imports for the items and BOMs.

    Thanks

    Hi Rich,

Let's see if I can help you:

I am assuming your are not using Routes, for your labor, since you are creating a "labor item" for the BOM.  In order to do this, you would need to do the following things:

    1. Model group set up
    a. Stocked Product = Yes (Cannot put anything on the BOM that is not "stocked")
    b. Financial Negative Inventory = Yes
    c. Physical Negative Inventory = Yes
    d. Post Physical Inventory in Ledger = No

    Storage Dimensions
    Site and Warehouse only needed

FYI .. once you have transactions for an item and they are open, you cannot change the storage dimension.  It appears the Item Model Group you were trying to change to had a different cost method on it, as well.  This is not allowed.  So setting up your groups is most important before trying to do transactions.

As for the freight charges, are you using a costing sheet?  By cost group, you can add charges, such as freight, for given items.  You can also make the fixed and / or variable too.

There really isn't a basic document showing how to set up a BOM with "labor items" out there.  I will look through my white papers and see if I have anything.

Hopefully this information gets you started.  Please let me know if you need anything further.

Thank you for the reply, we are attempting to implement a BOM on an existing item which has transactions (long story).  We do not necessarily need to add the costs as a separate item for Labor and Freight.  I have been playing around with the costing sheets and I am attaching a task recorder of something I have thrown together based on review of other posts/presentations.

The error at the end is due to me not specifying posting accounts (I need to get the correct values), but would something like this add the labor and freight costs to each item?  Can I change to costing version on existing items without issue?

Another thing I have noticed is whoever setup to costing sheet for this item seems to have prices by each size/color combination and the prices seem to be based on color.  If we activate new prices based on the new version and only specify color, would it override the existing prices?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
