Has anyone started to test or use the new Planning Optimization service designed to replace the built-in master planning engine ?  We are about to upgrade to 10.0.16 but as we are running planned production orders the new service is not yet functionally equivalent .. but we know its coming and haven't started to test yet.

The built-in master planning engine is scheduled to be made obsolete (deprecated). It's being replaced by the Planning Optimization Add-in for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management. This topic provides information about the impact on new and existing deployments. It includes information about required actions.

    Hi Jonathan,

We are having several customers look at the upgrade as well. As you noted the full production support is not in quite yet. MSFT is targeting by April 2021 to support those functions, but capacity will still be a lingering item that won't come till later this year. The actual act of turning it on is fairly straightforward but you will only be able to test in Tier 2 and up boxes for now.  The MSFT TechNet is being updated consistently as this will be a large upgrade in terms of of functionality for most customers. Currently if you don't' have any planned production orders being calculated in your master plan you will receive an MRP batch log about the depreciation.  Once all the features have been rebuilt into the planning optimization Discrete Production targeting April 2021 and Formula plus Capacity being in October 2021 MSFT will require an exception request.  These dates are shifting so take them with a grain of salt.

The fit analysis in D365 has been helpful as well, if you do turn it on you will lose some production explosions currently from testing.  The fit analysis will tell you what the planning optimization won't support when you run it as well.

Keep an additional eye on all the feature mgmt. as they release new functions for Planning Optimization on just about every release so far.

It's getting very close and I think MSFT is trying to make it as seamless as possible, as with anything I believe it may still take a few releases to get all the key functions you require for a production operation.

    Kind Regards

    Hi -

I work with customers moving to Planning Optimization on a daily basis. The appeal of a 10 minute or less MRP run is a strong incentive. Keep in mind that Planning Optimization is an agile development exercise rather than big bang.

There is Yammer page you should join....

    https://www.yammer.com/dynamicsaxfeedbackprograms/#/threads/inGroup?type=in_group&feedId=17348655

I'll attach the latest PPTX on the functionality. There is a portion in the PPTX that details a new MRP message you may see in 10.0.16.

    Thanks.....Dave

Thanks, I've signed up to the Yammer group. I'm only now starting to realise what a MASSIVE change this is to the product. Replacing the planning engine is "open heart surgery" on the functionality affecting pretty much every manufacturing customer ..... I'm nervous about this one.
