Input data for embedded PowerApp in workspace

I was wondering whether anyone has worked on extending the "Input data for the PowerApp" dropdown to enable passing of data from the workspace to the powerapp. On attempting to embed the powerapp in a workspace, The dropdown is empty which prevents any values from being passed to the powerapp. I would love to know whether this can be extended and the best way to do this.

    Thank you

I don't think you can do that in a workspace natively.  The PowerApp datasource comes from the entity that the form that you're adding it to is built off of - similar to the Excel add-in.

If you look at this link, they've added a PowerApp to a workspace, but they weren't passing any variables from the workspace to the app.

    Hi Jacob,

Thanks for your post. This is exactly what I have noticed as well while going through all the available documentation. I believe the real value of the embedded powerapp is if we are able to pass values to it. By doing that, we can develop more functionality outside D365FO without performing a lot of customizations. If anyone has extended the OOB solution to make more fields available for selection in the Input to PowerApp dropdown, I would be really interested to know how they did it.

    Thank you.

    Hi Suhas,

Like Jacob mentioned, it is not possible on workspaces. If you have a form opened, you can also link/start PowerApps. If you use this feature, you can actually pass a field as parameter. At least it needs a datasource.
In some cases, there is no parameter required to start/link a PowerApp. For that scenario it would be a viable option to link a powerapp on a workspace.
Note that PowerApps are designed as citizen developer tool. It has limitations. In some cases, you would need to develop additional data entities to ensure performance in the PowerApp. E.g. if you need customer data and balances on overdue amounts, sales order totals etc, you can or use several data entities and do some Odata filtering or aggregations, but performance wise a new data entity with a few fields and some computed columns might be quicker.
