I have a client who has 2012 R2.  I have always used the security role Project assistant, buyer agent for creating purchase orders for a project.
the person can go to the common menu-item tasks-purchase order in the project module and do the PO fine, but if they go go common-all projects-choose the project-manage-item task- the purchase order does not show up.  I have tried 10 different security roles but it does not show up there.
Does anyone have any ideas why it is missing at the project level?

    Deb,

    Can you confirm the scenario?

So the user is assigned both the Buying Agent and Project Assistant roles? Have either of these roles been modified or are they out of the box?

When the user assigned these roles goes to Project Management and Accounting -> Common -> Item Tasks -> Project Purchase Orders they can see the purchase orders?

But if they go to Project Management and Accounting -> Common -> All Projects -> Select a Project -> Manage tab -> Item Tasks (there is one under the New area as well as Related Information) -> the Purchase Order option does not show up here?

Or are you saying that the purchase orders being shown for the project are different based on which route you take to view them?

If you cannot see the purchase order button on the Item Tasks drop down, the reason I asked about the roles being modified is because I took both the Buying Agent and Project Assistant roles and created them as subroles to a custom role and launched a test workspace via the Security Development Tool.

I then took it a step further and ran a task recording, of the steps and then used a free application I developed called the Task Recorder Parser to pull the menu items out of the task recording.

I created a test privilege with these menu items, and access to the ProjTable.

Then launched a test workspace using the Security Development Tool again, and was still able to see the purchase order drop down.

Feel free to reach out with any questions you have or if I misunderstood your issue.

Just to round out this thread, here's the rest of the thread Deb and I had.

I just ran some additional tests, I created a privilege with the following permissions:

    Menu Item Display:

    ProjProjectsListPage – Read

    ProjTableAuto – Read

    PurchTableListPageProject – Read

    Table:

    ProjTable – Delete

When I launched the Security Development Tool for this privilege I can get to the Purchase Orders option under Item Tasks.

Now if I remove the access from the PurchTableListPageProject permission, the option for Manage is taken away completely.

So it appears that this option is controlled by the access to the PurchTableListPageProject menu item display.

Just to check, I ran a role access report for this object within our Fastpath tool and found that both the Project Assistant and Buying Agent role have this access (at least in our AX 2012 R2 environment).

These appear to be the only out of box roles that have this access.
