Process to Duplicate Legal Entity for Test Environment

New D365 user here - Wondering if there is a way (and if it is simple) to create a new legal entity and have it be an exact duplicate of an existing legal entity (in all aspects including clients, vendors, roles etc).  We would like to create a very specific test environment for training purposes.  We had a sandbox environment although that is outdated and creating a new entity may be much easier.

    Hi Jennifer,

I can tell you that in D365FO, there is no easy way to create a legal entity that is the exact duplicate of another. Apparently that was a feature in AX2012 that was deprecated in D365.
I am no infrastructure person, but I know that our team takes exact copies of our production environment every so often to create our test environments. I would assume they do that somehow in LCS, but don't know any details. We have 4 test environments at the moment, and they all are copies of our production environment at different times.

    Good luck!

HI Jennifer, In Data Management, there is the "Copy into Legal entity" feature.
You can make a copy of all the entities that you need but be careful, they must be loaded in the proper order.
We use this to setup an entity for specific testing purposes and it works well but it is not an easy process to work through.

You could also utilize data packages/entities.  You can export all the data entities from the source company in packages, then modify them for the new entity (enter the new legal entity name, address, etc).  Then import these packages to create the new company.  Below are some links to go over to familiarize yourself with the process:

I think it will be much faster and actually more efficient to simply make a copy of production into another environment, and use that copy for testing.

Creating extra company in production for testing purposes is actually an inferior option since you are not testing the "real" configuration, but a certain adjustment of it, and there are many complication involved in the copy (creating new number sequences for example), but also the risk of inadvertently messing up production data, if for example any of the data used in testing is actually shared.
