Has anyone implemented the Sovos sales and use tax solution with AX2012?   I am looking to find a reference for the product.

I have a client on AX2012 R3 CU13 that is using SOVOS for sales tax calculation. They are not using the use tax functionality so I cannot speak to that. As for the sales tax calculation, the SOVOS solution has had numerous problems. The first attempt to go-live with SOVOS sales tax was a complete failure. The sales tax calculation performed so poorly it brought the entire system to a halt and we had to roll back. Then 8 months later, after numerous performance enhancements (mostly done by our internal DBAs) and load testing we were able to go live with SOVOS. However, the problems did not stop there. We have had issues at posting times (confirmation and invoicing) and found missing/incorrect tax on numerous posted documents. SOVOS is also being used to calculate tax in their retail stores and on their website. There are problems with the sales tax in AX not matching the amount calculated externally, even though the same tax engine (SOVOS) is doing the calculation. This then causes downstream/reconciliation issues. We have been live on SOVOS for over a year and are still releasing updates to fix issues.

I recommend at least looking at another solution provider. Of course there is Avalara but that solution also has its hiccups. The best tax solution I have seen for AX2012 is from Thomson Reuters and their OneSource Determination solution. You can find it on AppSource along with many other solutions. Good luck!

    Hi Tim,

Our experience has been a little different with Sovos. Full disclosure we're an integration partner of theirs but in the dozens of integration projects we've done we haven't run into many big issues. There's always a little configuration, maybe even development involved with matching their engine to the way you transact and apply tax (no two seem to be same) but they do have an adapter available for AX 2012 so I know it works. If you ever wanted to chat with the person on our team who handles all of the integrations we do with Sovos I know he'd be glad to talk to you. You can message me and I'll connect the two of you. In the meantime I'll see if I can get you someone on the user side to talk to.

You didn't say what version of AX2012 you are working with.  We are also looking to implement real time sales tax calculation with an integrated software solution.  I keep running into an AX2012 RU2 wall.  Multiple vendors have told me they do not have a connector for RU2, including One Source from Thomas Reuters and Vertex. Avalara says they can implement with our version of 2012 but the implementation costs are twice what they are for newer versions.  We are talking to Sovos - the sales rep is bringing in an engineer to discuss with us to see if they are an option.  I have also had discussions with TTR but they only offer calculation not outsourced return support.  We are also looking for the automated exemption certificate management piece as we do drop shipping for multiple customers in a wide variety of locations.

If anyone else has working sales tax software on AX 2012 RU2 can you please share any recommendations you might have concerning on going support for the connector to the older version of AX  and any difficulties you had in implementation.  If you have any other companies that are possible partners for this project I would also appreciate the company names.

    Thanks.
