Two Offices, One ERP
With over 100 years under their belt, Simpson Technologies is a fifth-generation family owned business specializing in the design and production of advanced process technologies and services for the global metal casting and chemical process industries.
Simpson implemented Microsoft Dynamics AX 4.0 in 2008 at their Swiss office with the goal of having the U.S. office up and running on the same ERP solution soon after. Julie McMillin, chief information officer, shares, “The need for a new ERP was more pressing in the Swiss office as they had recently completed a major acquisition. We ended up waiting to implement in the U.S. until 2014, but I’m proud to say we are now ONE Simpson Technologies both running Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2.”
Being the first time in their 100-year history that both offices are on the same platform at the Julie McMillin CASE STUDY | Simpson Technologies same time, Simpson is realizing some major benefits and possibilities for their business, such as consolidated financials and easy insight into the operations of both offices. “It allows us to be very flexible as well as keep our headcount down. For example, our salesperson here in the U.S. can create quotes and sales orders for our Swiss business in the morning, and then switch over to doing the same thing for our U.S. business in the afternoon. That wouldn’t be possible if we didn’t have our two offices on the same ERP,” Julie says.
Global Network of Partners
Simpson worked with a global network of Partners to help with their most recent implementation to Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2, and it made a world of difference.

Now that Simpson is thriving on one platform, other technology advancements are coming to light. They are implementing Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online to ensure their sales force has access to the system wherever they can get an Internet connection. “Having access to the system from anywhere in the world will make it so much easier for our team to update opportunities, forecast sales, or spot trends in certain areas. We plan to connect some of that data to our Microsoft Dynamics AX system as well, for even more efficiency,” Julie shares.
Simpson has never felt like they should have chosen another ERP. Simpson has never felt like they should have chosen another ERP. “Continuing to build out and enhance our Microsoft Dynamics AX system is an evergreen process,” Julie shares, “and we’ll continue to tweak it for our particular needs for years to come, but that possibility alone makes it the perfect solution for us.”
