Chart of Accounts

I have a question regarding Chart of Accounts setup.  What are pros/cons to using Advanced Rules vs. Org. Hierarchy to properly roll up for reporting?  Ex: The organization has 7 Divisions and all departments will always be specific as to which Division they roll up to and the customer is concerned about having too many Findims for end users to select from even using Advanced Rules.  I have heard that Advanced Rules are most recent and more common, but want to be sure we are providing best option.

    Thanks for any insight!

    Hi Nicole

In my experience the Advanced rules are best left to handle the exceptions to financial dimension requirements, for example if the GL for travel expenses might also require the use of an employee ID but the other GL's in the range cover by the specific account structure does not.

The options therefore would be to either embed the organisation structure into the main account structure (which would work) or to use the organisation hierarchy. The advantage of using the organisation hierarchy is that it is date effective, i.e. you can pre-load a change in structure with a date from which the change is effective, which would automatically come into force in the account structure on that date, i.e. you're only making the change in one place. If you're using Management Reporter that same organisation hierarchy can be used for reporting there too.

    Regards

    HI Nicole,

What exact version of Microsoft Dynamics are you using? If it is about selecting financial dimensions, then as of Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations version 8.1 there is a concept of Derived dimensions which also might be helpful.
If you are using account structures/advanced rules, then you have to define reporting rows yourself also. The organization hierarchies can be used as input for Management reporter rows as also mentioned by Dave. Using the organization hierarchies, you can only use the internal organizations which are available as backing end dimensions as well. Using account structures/advanced rules, you can use any dimension.
