MRP and real time posting question

    Hello All,

What type of individual would you bring on board for a project to implement MRP, real time shop floor posting, scrap posting and such in AX 2012 R3?  Would you be better off with a manufacturing person who understands all these concepts but might have little AX experience, or would you look for an AX person?  My concern with an AX consultant is they may know how to use AX, but could they implement a project out on the floor?  Of course, the optimal person would be able to do both!

I would love to hear how some of you might have managed a project like this.

    Thanks,

    Sam

    Hi Sam,
I am that AX consultant with  20 plus years in manufacturing and 10 years with AX focusing on manufacturing and planning.  AX 2012 R3 up to CU13 had a lot of planning / MRP bugs.  So a person without a good understanding of MRP in a 2012 environment my not recognize bugs in the system if you are not on CU13.  More importantly;  all MRP systems suggest production orders and purchase orders in a time fence but they all do it differently so understanding how to interpret the information on planning / MRP screens is very important, for this you have to have someone with strong AX master planning experience. The learning curve in a complex manufacturing environment is long.  If I could not find both I would be looking for a AX persons with two or three MRP AX successful implementations in an environment with about the same complexity as your environment.  I'd check references very carefully, there are a lot of failed or kind of working MRP implementations.

Shop floor execution is fairly straight forward implementation within AX but there is normally a lot of resistance on the floor so a strong manufacturing background is needed to make it successful.  A "manufacturing person" can be tough how to configure and reporting steps with a few days of training.

    Hi @Sam Clark,

Are you looking to integrate with your equipment to obtain finished production data, or post production journals from the floor? Do you have an MES or any other system that is taking recorded transactions of your usage and output?

Honestly, I think the best approach would be to get an AX resource who understands how AX works to get the best data possible. There are a ton of great Manufacturing resources out there who understand both AX and manufacturing, having experience with both.

Shameless plug - @Andrew Lencsak and I will be hosting another Study Group through the user group for the MB-320 Dynamics 365 Supply Chain, Manufacturing exam very soon. You should attend! It will be several weeks of discussions all about manufacturing - and still relevant to AX as well! Keep an eye out for it!

Agree with Kelly, I think a lot of partners have people with those skillsets, just have to know where to look. When I was an end user (I now have many clients who do the same) we interviewed the consultants our partner was proposing to look for what we think we needed from an experience background. I was lucky to be an end user for a manufacturing company using Dynamics for 6 years prior to consulting and try to leverage that as much as possible. there are a lot of skilled consultants who came from industry out there that would be able to help you with this type of initiative.

    Hi Kelly,

I think for this project we would want to be able to post production and scrap from the floor.  Currently we don't use MRP in production planning and the production orders are posted after all 3 shifts have run.  Of course, this causes issues with material transfers, and so on and so on.

We were hoping for someone who could be out on the floor executing the project as opposed to someone trying to do it from an office.  Make sense?

How do I find your study group?

    Hi Sam,

I understand - it's better for MRP and understanding demand if you get closer to "real-time" data from your production output and inventory usage.

MRP is one of those things that you can understand conceptually, but until you put in the parameters and see the output, you won't know what you really want. I, like Andrew, worked for many years in manufacturing. I worked on the floor and then using AX. MRP and production are some of my favorite modules in the system because they are so fun to work with and provide such a high level of reward when set up and working properly.

The class isn't out there yet - but will be very soon. We are working out the final logistics of it now!
