Does anyone know how to avoid negative reservations during the automatic release of sales orders?  We are using this and noticed that we get shipments and loads created without work because the reservation is negative.  Shouldn't it skip this whole Sales order since no inventory is available?

    Thanks so much.

    Hi Trent,
All that the system cares about when releasing to warehouse is that there is a reservation.  It is in the creation of the work that it checks inventory in locations that fit with the location directives, and either builds out that work, or fails (as in your case). I think the best way to resolve this would be to look at why you have negative reservations.  Can you perhaps expand a little on why you are seeing negative reservations?  Is there inventory in other locations in the same warehouse?  Is that inventory somehow getting moved or consumed between reservation and time of release?  Since reservations occur only at the warehouse level, but work can only be created if there's inventory in a location allowed by location directives, you might have to do some tweaking to correct this issue.

Hi Trent, I'm going to take a guess and say there is some confusion that happens with a lot of companies and advanced warehousing. There is a parameter on the warehouse that controls if available inventory is reserved when the Automatic release of sales orders job runs. However, it also looks at the parameter "Quantity to release" that you set when that job is run. If that parameter says "All" instead of "Physical reserved" it will create shipments and loads for all line quantities, not just those that were reserved. Make sure that parameter is set correctly when running the Automatic release of sales orders and it will not create any lines on the shipments for quantities that are not available.

    Thanks
    Drew

Thanks for the replies, sorry for the delay, couldn't log on for a couple days.

I'll try to expand based on your replies.  We do have the warehouse parameter enabled on all WMS warehouses and have the auto sales order release set to Physical reserved.  We also don't have any inventory in the locations set on the location directives.  We still are getting Sales order lines reserving with a negative.  This causes a shipment and load to create, but no work since there really isn't any inventory.  Issue we have is now that the shipment and load are created and we get inventory to cover, the work will not create.  Makes me think it is in the wave, but I'm not certain.  Seems to be sporadic also, not all SO's are acting this way.  Could there be inventory on order that will fill this reservation that is causing the negative reservation?  Not sure.  Thanks again for the replies.

Hi Trent, do you have inventory in another location in the same warehouse and inventory status? Excluding locations from location directives will not prevent reservations from occurring, it only prevents work creation. Reservation logic is just looking for any physical available inventory in the same Site/warehouse/inventory status. Is this what is happening?

That's what is confusing me, there isn't.  This item is shared with several sites and there is inventory in other warehouses in those sites, just not in the one the SO is set for.  Hope this makes sense.

Are you using ATP, reserving against orders, have negative inventory turned on, or have any customizations against reservations?  The system should only be able to reserve what is available in the warehouse and matching inventory status by default (depending on your reservation hierarchy)- meaning you would have to have something in the warehouse for it to reserve, and therefor released to warehouse...

Found the issue, should have been pretty obvious, but I missed it.  Some of the items on Sales orders had an item model group that accepted negative inventory.  We are working to resolve this issue.  Thanks for all the replies and sorry to waste your time.

thanks for coming back to the discussion and sharing what you found. too often when a solution is found it never gets entered back for those that follow the discussion boards, and we are left wondering what happened. What you found is a great thing for everyone to look at when troubleshooting the same issue. My hats off to you for reporting the find.
