Copy Routing

We want to establish routes to be used as 'templates'. Routes within a product family, although different, contain a lot of the same information with minor tweaking from one to another. These would not have any parts assigned to them. Rather, they would be 'copied' to the part as a new route specifically for that part and further tweaked.

Issue: To speed up creating these 'templates' we tried to copy from one route to a new route.  When copying from a route to a new route (not to an item) the route lines copy, but the line details are not copied.

Information on the stop message in the 'infolog' that is returned is not found in any 'google' searches. Many combinations of the 'setup' options in the copy screen have been tried and we get the same results.

If this route is copied to an item, everything copies as expected without error. Why will it not copy straight from one route to another?

    Hi Mark,

I had this issue in AX 2012 as well. I found that even if I selected an established route to be used on an item, it would not bring over the line information and I would have to enter it manually every time.

The good news, this appears to be fixed and working much better in D365FO. The bad news, this doesn't help you now.

I tried to locate a hotfix for this, but upon preliminary search results, there doesn't appear to be one. At this point, a development project may be the best way for you to fix this.

    Hello Kelly,

Actually, it does help us now.  We can stop pursuing it in AX 2012.  This has cost many hours.

Is this the same situation for copying BOMs?

Also - we are able to copy an established route (a template) to an item successfully as the line information copied for us.  This seems different from your experience - "I found that even if I selected an established route to be used on an item, it would not bring over the line information and I would have to enter it manually every time."  -  What was the perspective?

    Thank you!

    Hi Mark,

Glad to be able to help (even if it isn't what you wanted to hear).

I found the Copy BOM feature very helpful and used it a lot in 2012 without issue.

As for the Route issue, we may be referring to different versions. My experience with this issue was in 2012 RTM. Sometimes, Microsoft makes minor changes to things and they get slightly better between versions. As for the route issue, I remember telling someone at Microsoft my troubles with it and they agreed that what I was experiencing was definitely a shortcoming of the Route functionality.
